Scout’s Summer Camp 2023

Date: 5th Aug 2023 Author: Vista

We survived! The persistent rain for the first five days didn’t stop us. So many amazing activities have been enjoyed from Ghyll Scrambling and Kayaking on Windermere to Climbing and High Ropes as well as hammocks and great food!

Kayaking on Lake Windermere.

And the sun even made an appearance just as we were leaving.

  • Day 1 – Travel, setup and burgers for tea!

  • Day 2 – Making the most of the amazing terrain on the Lake District with a hike with a stop for the spot of lunch of pot noodles. Over 5 miles in very challenging terrain and poor weather.

  • Day 3 – Ghyll Scrambling for half the Troop. An amazing adventure up a river. There had been lots of rain, so the water was very high and fast flowing. Meanwhile, the other half of the Troop were tree climbing and climbing the gauntlet. All followed by A rainy afternoon on camp. But making the most of it with fires, wood work and cooking great food – Whole chicken, cooked in the Dutch oven, with egg fried rice, mixed veg, and crusty bread. Yum!

A spot of lunch while hiking in the Lake District.

  • Day 4 – Kayaking excursion on Windermere from Fell Foot with a spot of lunch on an island!

  • Day 5 – And another rainy start to the day. But that didn’t stop us, a spot of rock climbing to begin. In the afternoon it finally stopped raining and the Scouts “Galactic Empire” hammock village sprung into existence ready for the night. All before the best meal of the camp, beef stew with apple crumble, all cooked on the fire in the Dutch oven. Top Scouting.

  • Day 6 – A sunny morning on camp, for the first time since we’ve been there. A spot of tree climbing and the gauntlet again with the Scouts racing to the top. While the other half of the Troop give the ghyll scrambling a go, this time with less water! The afternoon saw a Troop trip to Bowness-on-Windermere for a bit of shopping, making the most of the only sun and we had chips for tea!

Fire cooked food! Chicken and rice for tea.

  • Day 7 – The final day, a big breakfast with sausages, black pudding, eggy bread and beans before dismantling the site to go home.

Finally had some sun on the last day.

The Scouts have been amazing throughout. Showing resilience and enthusiasm in the face of some challenging activities and poor weather. Just organising their own kit and keeping things dry in the conditions was difficult, challenges that they all rose to. Each Scout should be proud of their achievements and will hopefully look back with fond memories.

Our young leaders have been truly phenomenal this week. Their proactiveness about camp and leadership of activities has been amazing, making the whole week run much more smoothly and taking some of the burden off the leaders. Few groups of YLs could have been trusted to lead such tasks, but you rose to the challenges with ease, a testament to your leadership and Scouting skills. We could not have run the week without you.

My biggest thanks go to the leaders, who, yet again, have given up a week of their time to volunteer. Not only the week of the camp but the many, many hours of planning and meetings to ensure the camp was a success. You’re an amazing team, thanks for everything.
