Alumni Scheme

Group Alumni (14 – 18)

We’ve created our Young Leaders and Alumni scheme for leavers of the Scout Troop, to continue their links with the group.

Young Leaders and Alumni enjoying activities on camp, October 2022

Wherever your Scout is going next – joining an Explorer Unit, becoming a Young Leader or leaving structured Scouting – we don’t want the 4th to leave them behind just yet. The wealth of experiences and opportunities they have enjoyed as a Scout can continue. Once a 4th, always a 4th.

When Scouts age out, they are automatically enrolled into the scheme. We will continue to hold your Scout’s details and will contact you periodically with updates, including invitations to events and support at Section’s meetings.

You can opt out of the Young Leaders and Alumni scheme anytime by email.

The scheme ends when Young Leaders and Alumni reach the age of 18. Here, they can continue Scouting as an adult volunteer leader or simply look back on their time in Scouting with fond memories.

The alumni scheme is completely free, so please cancel or amend your standing order now your Scout has left the Troop.

As well as maintaining links with the Group, the scheme comes with a number of benefits…

Young Leaders

Continue your Scouting journey with another Section – Squirrels, Beavers, or Cubs?

Being a Young Leader can take many forms…

If you can commit regularly to supporting a section, you can join a Section’s leadership team as a Young Leader. Get involved in planning and delivering the exciting programme our younger members enjoy, while benefiting from joining in the activities and attending camps!

If you can’t support a section regularly, no problem. We will send out periodic requests for support, where you can sign up, help run activities and get involved in the fun as an occasional supporter.

Ad Hoc Camps

The value the role our young leaders play in running our Sections and want to maintain links with our alumni in person.

Throughout the year we arrange occasional camps locally where our Young Leaders and Alumni can get together and enjoy some of their favourite Scouting based activities.

District Youth Team

The District Youth Team is gathering momentum. The team, made up of members aged between 18 and 25, aims to embed young people’s ideas and decisions into local Scouts.

A message from the District Youth Commissioner…

“Hi! Congrats on being too old to be a scout anymore! You’ll know me as Bob, the Squirrel Leader (who often gets roped into helping at other Sections), but in a ‘professional’ Scouting capacity I am Helena, one of the Youth District Commissioners for Stafford (alongside Jack, an Explorer Leader at St. Vincent). Together we ensure YouShaped is effectively accomplished across the District, putting young people first! In this role, we are trying to organise a ‘District youth team’ to promote young leaders in the district as well as ensure the young people’s voices are heard. If you are interested, please contact Vista and he’ll get you in touch with me.

Keeping in touch…

We won’t bombard you with information, being part of the programme means members can take as much or as little from the scheme as they like.

The only direct communication you will receive from us is invites to camps or Section support.

To do this, we’ve created ‘Events’ on OSM for our YLs and Alumni. This will make it easier for leaders when organising activities and camps, where we need ad hoc YL support, and easier for you and your YL to sign up or decline at the press of a few buttons.

You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram so you can see what we’re getting up to and parents will get continued membership of the Scout’s Facebook group.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
