Assessment Questions and Criteria

Practical Assessment

  1. Demonstrate the ability to safely whittle a stick to a point with a knife.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to safely cut a ‘V’ channel into a log with a hatchet or felling axe and secure the log while cutting.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to safely use a splitting axe and block.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to safely cut a branch, with at least a 2 inch diameter, using a saw.

Theory Assessment

  1. What does the law in the UK state about carrying knives?
  2. Give examples of when it would be appropriate and inappropriate for you to carry a knife.
  3. How would you transport your knife to Scouts or a camp?
  4. What are the main different types of knives and axes used in bushcraft at Scouts?
  5. State some rules that should be followed when using knives at Scouts?
  6. How would you look after a knife, axe and saw between uses?
  7. What would you do in the event of a serious cut injury?
  8. Demonstrate how you would open a knife. (Swiss army/folding and fixed blade)
  9. Demonstrate how you would pass a knife safely.
  10. Demonstrate how you would pass an axe safely.
  11. What safety equipment is required when using an axe or saw?
  12. How would you construct a chopping area for using an axe or saw?

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
